Obituary of Andrea Hanington

Born on March 14, 1939, in Graz, Austria, Andrea (Gertrude) Hanington (nee Daeuber) died on February 15, 2025, in her London ON home, in her sleep with her beloved cat, Marco, by her side. She was 85. A remarkable woman and mother, Andrea was also a nurse, Judoka, origami artist, cat lover, laboratory technician, bike-rider, coffee-drinker, friend and Nana. She was also our family’s official photographer, and she chronicled events in her diary almost every day since 1962. Feisty, funny, practical, principled, determined, positive and friendly, Andrea raised three children on her own, instilling in us a healthy skepticism and solid work ethic, a love of music and books, respect for nature and wildlife and how to waste as little as possible. Andrea's colleagues will recall her as skilled, patient and witty, and her friends as clever, adventurous and a fine conversationalist. Andrea was always up for a road trip, live theatre, a political debate, food that somebody else cooked and spending time with her family. Among other things, Andrea will be remembered for her lively sense of humour, her energy, courage and generosity, and her beautiful gift-wrapping and greeting cards. Andrea was also as cute as heck. Andrea is survived by her children, Pam (Terrence), Mike (Sue) and Chris (Cathy), grandchildren Charlotte, Oliver and Evan (Avery), and her best friend, Cheryl as well as friends and relatives in Canada and Austria. As per Andrea’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Instead, her family will gather, as usual, on her birthday for pancakes and maple syrup at our local sugar bush followed by Black Forest cake and good coffee. For those wishing to remember Andrea with a charitable donation, she regularly supported Animalert London and the Blyth Festival. Any donation that supports animal rescue or the performing arts is also welcome.
