Obituary of John Robert Birtch

With broken, yet thankful hearts, the family of John Robert Birtch shares that he passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on June 8th, 2025, in his 93rd year. John was born in the upstairs bedroom of the Birtch Brothers General Store in Richmond, Ontario, the second son of Irwin and Irene Birtch. The family later moved to nearby Manotick, where John made lifelong memories with his siblings and childhood friends. He was deeply close to his brothers and sisters: predeceased by Bill (Jill) and Bob (Betty) and survived by sisters Nora (Everett) and Pat (Cam), younger brother Don (Lois), and brother-in-law Des (Tui), and many nieces and nephews. At 17, John left home to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. While stationed in Centralia, he met the love of his life, Arlene (née Robinson). Their marriage spanned 66 years and stood as a beautiful testament to partnership and devotion. After his service, John began a long and dedicated career at Wolverine Tube, retiring more than four decades later. John and Arlene built a life in London, Ontario, where they raised their two children, Steve (Sue) and Kathy (Ron). John had a lifelong passion for hockey. He played, coached, and supported the game at every level. He coached Red Circle, Huron East, and later the Wolverine Tube team in the East London Manufacturers Hockey League (ELMHL). Coincidentally, an influx of former Huron East players during a Wolverine hiring wave sparked a run of championships, much to his delight. He had a soft spot for kids who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to participate, if it wasn’t for his support. John continued to play into his 80s with the Huff-n-Puff league. A loyal Leafs fan, he never gave up hope for a Stanley Cup. In retirement, John and Arlene enjoyed golfing at Sunningdale and traveling. John had a strong friends group who enjoyed sharing stories and laughs over hands of Gin daily at lunch, for years at Tony’s Pizza and later at Highland Golf Club. Above all, John remained devoted to his family. He was gentle, generous, and unwavering in his support for those he loved. Whether quietly helping behind the scenes or stepping forward when needed, his heart always led the way. John is survived by his beloved grandchildren Cristian, Shayne, Nicola, and Olivia along with their partners, and great-grandchildren Ace, Angeles, and Reggie. His love also extended to the family’s pets, including dear Phoebe, who was by his side in his final moments. John maintained strong connections with his siblings and their families in the Peterborough / Ottawa region, making great efforts to ensure the wider family remained united. Arlene and her family extend their deepest gratitude to the numerous healthcare professionals who supported John with compassion and expertise. Their care helped him maintain quality of life and dignity while old age brought its challenges. In particular, the staff at Amica played a vital role in his final months, offering not only exceptional medical attention but heartfelt kindness and comfort to John and his family. Honoring John’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. In his memory, any act of kindness carried out with John in mind would be a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy is rooted in love, loyalty, and quiet strength.
