Obituary of Karl-Erik Einar Jonsson
Peacefully, and surrounded by his family, dad passed away on February 11th, at the age of 90 in London, Ontario. Loving husband to Maivor and beloved father to Catrine, Birgitta, and Magnus. Loved father-in-law to Brian, Darrell, and Victoria. Cherished Morfar to Dylan, Erik, Christina, Samantha, Monika, and Sarah. Beloved Farfar to Ryan and Chloe.
Predeceased by his parents Einar and Signe, his brother Stig-Evert, mother-in-law Anna, father-in-law Gottfrid, sister-in-law Ann-Britt, brother-in-law Olle, and niece Lena. Karl-Erik leaves behind his dear sister-in-law Birgit, nephews Christer, Mats, Mikael, Stefan, and niece Ann-Christine back home in Sweden.
Born and raised in Sweden, dad developed an early fascination with how things worked, science, nature, and math, a passion that led him to pursue a career in engineering. Through dedication, hard-work, and curiosity, he built a successful professional life which culminated into him not only moving to Canada to pursue the next step in his career but also ultimately becoming a President & General Manager in the Pulp & Paper industry. His work took him and his fellow Swedes across the globe, and travel became a defining part of his life. During his career, he earned the respect of customers, colleagues, and partners alike, known for his leadership, fairness, friendliness, and professionalism.
With courage and a sense of adventure, dad made the life-changing decision to move his young family to Canada. Driven by his adventurous side, he took his family on countless trips across North America to broaden our experiences and perspectives. Dad and mom made sure that we also travelled regularly back to Sweden to visits with friends and family. It was important for them that we learned and lived our Swedish language and culture (even to this day!).
Dad also leaves behind many friends in Canada and in Sweden. Friendships that spanned decades that were fostered through work, get-togethers, parties, and trips. Long after retirement, dad and mom continued to cherish the phone calls and emails with friends no matter where they lived. Countless fond memories were created and cherished that will live on in both family and friends.
For those that knew him, dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He valued hard work, lifelong learning, and kindness, and he passed these values on through both words and example. His steady presence, wisdom, kindness, and quiet humour will be deeply missed by all.
‘He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.’
A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Longworth Retirement home and the nurses at Victoria hospital for their help over the last few months. Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of life will be held. In Karl’s memory, donations can be made to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation (Hjärt-Lungfonden).
