I spent many hours with Matt in the Watch Office in old Station One at 340 Waterloo. Always smiling and inquisitive he was quick to mete out a hug and an “I like you!” He will be missed.

I am on the fire department. Our truck was assigned to assist the London Airport fire dept during the air show. This involved some pre- training but during the air show, we were parked in the airport fire station. I knew we were the only people from the LFD sent to help so imagine my surprise when, just before the show started, I got a radio message the they had picked up a firefighter and were delivering him to me. The van pulls up, the door opens, a guy steps out wrestling a bicycle out of it. Then, out crawls someone. Matt. He had been riding his bicycle up and down the runway wearing a LFD crested, dark blue shirt. We checked to see how he got into the secured airport property riding his bicycle. Then the mystery was solved. He rode his bike up to the service gate. The gate fuel and catering trucks use. The gate was closed and under guard via a camera connected to security. The guard saw him on the monitor sitting on his bicycle wearing his Fire Department fatigues and opened the gate for him. Mat must have thought fate had offered him a chance and he was not going to let THAT go to waste. He rode in and around for a bit until he found this gloriously long strait away, the runway. He started to motor on that. Then he saw the grandstand and figured, as he was dressed up in his favourite shirt, he may as well entertain them by racing his bike up and down the runway for their viewing entertainment. Now the airport officials were pretty perplexed to see a Firefighter showing off for the crowd on his bicycle. One said that when he first saw him he though it was part of a fire safety program the FD had for events. So did the gate keeper, obviously. Well, Matt and enjoyed the show sitting in the best seats in the house. The open fire station which abutted the runway.
That is only one great story I have of Matt. The crew at Central Fire Starion used to watch this young boy sitting across the street on his bike. Well we invited him in and for me, that was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with Matt through the Department and the years he spent in the Track Three disabled ski program. When I became Deputy Fire Chief, I gave Matt a job to keep him close to the Fire Department Every Thursday, Matt and his support worker would come to Central for Matt to polish the chrome on the Fire Trucks.
Though we rarely saw one another later in his life we always enjoyed running into one another. I am glad I met Matt. His company was always refreshing. I will always remember him and his ways.

Thanks to the initial kindness of John Mollica I also encountered Matt when he would visit our stations and camp out waiting for an alarm so he could get us to sound the air horn and the vehicle sirens. I would often encounter him out and about and always had a smile and an assemblage of his own personal uniform style. He was a much loved member of the extended LFD family and it was gratifying to see all the community supports he had in place to enable him to live his best life. Saddened by his passing but happy to have known him. A true character with a big heart and a bigger smile. Condolences to his family and friends.

Met Matt back in the late 80's early 90's when he walked into our firehall. He was a regular visitor for decades and was always welcome at any station. Gave him many FD tee shirts that he wore often; he used to say he worked for us and for a few years had regular visits. Truck 6 or engine #1 he loved the trucks and our company. Condolences to all family and friends on his passing. We will miss you my friend.

dear Lindsey and Matt's family. Matt was indeed an important member of our l'Arche community for the longest time. His presence was missed when he could not attend a potluck or a picnic or an open-mic. He loved our annual banquet, coming in his best suit and tie, he was very central to the stage with speakers and politiciens. He was a true ambassador. Every time I would see him, he would report on his visit with the fire department, or the police, his going to the airport , what was there, who was there , and introduce me to the new badges he had received. Matt loved children, asked about them. He loved to sing as well at Faith and Light and at potlucks. He always made sure that plans were strong for our events and shared his desires to attend, it is difficult to think he is no longer part of us on a weekly basis. Sincere condolences to Lindsey , his family and his circle of friends.

Although we spoke often in years past when I was at the L’Arche events and activities, I hadn’t seen Matt in a long time. In a way it didn’t matter. He left that kind of indelible impression. (Make that many indelible impressions). I feel troubled that I will never see him again.
He helped Tony-Mary Bee’s husband- and me build the swing set behind our L’Arche Cana house in Byron. It was a long time ago. Seems like yesterday. Matt was site foreman, as I recall. He kept us on our toes, frequently telling us that we were’t paying enough attention to the swing kit instructions, as in “come on now.” I am a better handyman because of it.

I had the pleasure of working with Matt at Alice Saddy for many years. We became very close and Matt enjoyed having Louis and I work together with Matt for quite a long time. Matt was amazing to work with, hang out with, share many laughs and enjoy many of his favourite hang outs. We enjoyed going to my mechanic and Matt knew Gary really well. Matt and I enjoyed going to Tim Horton's, Cherryhill Mall, the fire department, the Western Fair, L'Arche London and London Majors games. I often dropped Matt at one of these destinations at the end of my shift. Matt knew so many people in the community and had good friends everywhere we went. He was very social and loved getting out and doing things in the community. He knew any Police Officer or Fireman we would run into and they all loved him. I especially liked being with Matt, we joked constantly and had a great time together always. I am still in shock and saddened to see Matt gone way too early. He will definitely be missed by so many and I will miss running into him and getting a hug, and laughing and joking like we never missed a beat. He was such an amazing guy, with a loving family that did so much to let Matt be as independent as possible!!!

Thank you Paul for your kind words. Your friendship with my brother was long and beautiful. I know how much he enjoyed spending time with you and laughs you shared. I know how important you were to him. Thanks for letting Matt’s light shine and helping him have such an independent life.
