Obituary of Matthew Christopher Woolcock

It feels impossible to find words that can truly honour the passing of someone who left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He never turned down the chance to give a toast, made a grand entrance more than once, and has left us all wanting much more of his beautiful shining light. A big sports fan, Matt loved watching the game, any game, and cheering for his teams. He enjoyed a beer with “the boys” from time to time. Being surrounded by the people he loved, and who loved him in return, simply being part of the gang, brought him so much happiness. He always had time for a coffee or a nice cup of tea and a chat. He never met a motorcycle, car, fire truck, ambulance, police car, Timmy’s coffee, or home-cooked meal that he didn't like. Matthew loved car rides. He would call “shotgun” and sing along to a playlist of his favourite songs. Before the playlists, there were cassette tapes, and before those, eight tracks tucked in the glove box, ready in case the urge struck Matt to belt out a tune. His unbreakable bond with his little sister, Lyndsey, has seen them both through so many of life's challenges, but even more of its joys and celebrations together, always. Matty was known for his big, kind heart, his generous greetings, distinctive style, and his legendary bear hugs, all of which will be profoundly missed. Matty passed away suddenly on 25 February, far too soon. Beloved son of Charlene Snow (d. 2020) and Clifford and Brenda Woolcock. Adored step-son to Declan Cunningham. Precious big brother to Lyndsey Davison and cherished brother-in-law to Jason Davison. Treasured nephew to Chris Snow and Libby Wood, Bonnie and Mike Tudrick, Marilyn Snow, Frank Snow, Bill and Margaret Snow, Deborah and Robert Prior. Preceded in death by Carol and Micheal Gubesch, and Barbra Bellpearche. Matt was a proud and beloved member of the L’Ache London community. He shared his laughter and his unique gifts with his many friends there. The family wishes to express deep appreciation and special thanks to Louis Frangakis, who has been Matty's dear friend and care companion for 32 years. As well as the staff and friends of The Alice Saddy Association, including Matt’s dearest friend, Brendan Watson. Louis’ Tribute to Matt Matt was a beloved fixture in his community. A very social person, he had many friends and was well-liked by a lot of people throughout London and Windsor where he was born. His friendly demeanour, personality, and willingness to help were truly heartfelt. His quick wit, big hugs, sense of humour and engaging personality endeared him to the people around him. He was fiercely independent and had a remarkable memory for people he had met. He related and connected with police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, visiting all the local firehouses and knowing everyone by name. He had volunteered at Fire Hall One and participated in the Santa Claus parade, typically offering “security” for Santa and riding the safety bug with his firefighter friends. Matt proudly wore a variety of police and fire shirts, badges and pins, that were given to him by “the boys”. He would visit his security friends at Masonville Mall socializing with staff and customers. He loved to go to the airport and watch planes, participated in Track Three Skiing, L’Arche community events like Open Mic, and various karaoke venues. He had a phenomenal singing voice and liked all types of music. Matt had made friends with the local baseball teams, the Werewolves, Tigers, and Majors, and was a regular at their games and helped in audience participation events. The teams reciprocated his friendship by making him a part of their team with his own baseball card. Matt loved animals and kids and always asked staff about their families and offered to help if needed. His self-advocacy and ability to know what he liked and who he liked were key to his success. His love for his family, especially his mother Charlene and his little sister Lyndsey and brother-in-law Jay was incredibly important to him and shaped who he was and the challenges he overcame.
