One of my most cherished memories of my big sister, Susan, took place at Amherst Shore. She was part of the “Shore Patrol,” a group of teenagers from cottages along the beach. Though she was old enough to run with them and I wasn’t, she never made me feel small or out of place.
Each night, she welcomed me into the circle, making me feel included, valued, and truly part of something. She gave me the gift of belonging when I needed it most, far more than she probably realized.
It was one of the happiest summers of my life, and much of its joy came from having Susan beside me, seeing me, choosing to include me, and making me feel accepted and loved. Her kindness transformed those summer nights into a memory I will always hold close to my heart.
Missing you Susan...

Susan walked softly, but carried a huge heart. She was wise, intuitive, scary smart, and quick with an insight or hilariously wry zinger. She had a ferocious intelligence. She kept her own counsel, and sized people up quickly. But if you were in, you were in for life. She left a mark on everyone whose path she crossed.
Heartfelt condolences to you, Randy, her family, and all who loved her.
She will be missed.

I will deeply miss Aunt Susan. Some of my fondest memories are the times we shared with family at the farm, in the city, and in Collingwood. She had a remarkable way of making people feel special, always taking an interest in their lives and celebrating their achievements. Her creativity shone through in the handmade birthday and Christmas cards she lovingly crafted, and in the fun games she would invent to bring everyone together (especially those that involved a quarter). Her kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit touched so many lives, and I will cherish those memories forever.

You have totally captured the Susan I knew.
Despite my somewhat scruffy shoes, lol, she hired me as a summer student in the Circulation Dept at Maclean Hunter which eventually led me to a long career in the field. She was a true mentor and was there for me many times over the years when I needed support at work or personally, even after she left MH. We worked hard of course, but also had a lot of fun. She once held a staff beach party at her home in the middle of winter (crank up the heat, everyone in shorts, sangria on tap, I think there was even sand brought in…). She was smart, creative, fair, direct and honest; a fabulous role model and a pivotal person in my life. I am full of gratitude to have known her.
Randy, I am sending you many virtual hugs!!!

When I was a kid, I remember the incredible joy I felt whenever my big sister came home for a visit. I can still picture her walking through that front door and the happiness that would wash over me. I don’t remember many moments from my childhood as clearly as those. I would light up with the biggest smile, and somehow, the whole room seemed brighter when she arrived. What made it even more special was seeing that same warmth and happiness reflected in her smile when she saw me. For those few moments, nothing else seemed to matter. She was home, and I was simply happy that my big sister was there. Years and miles have gone by but I still smile and think of her when I see the Atlantic Ocean... I hope she realized how much I loved her "and that she knew that I would love her forever".

My heartfelt hugs to you, Randy. Susan was a friend and mentor. I regret that we lost touch. Susan was the voice of sanity (really) for so many in publishing. I am very sad to hear this news and will keep her memory close. Josie Vogel

Susan was more than a sister in law to me, she was also my loving friend. We shared our love of nature, animals, gardening, reading & so much more. I have happy memories spent with Susan & Randy in Thornbury & on our family farm enjoying the lake, woods, trails & beautiful starry nights around the bonfire. Susan was kind & generous & a loving sister to Peter & Aunt to Alexander. She will be missed more than words can say. Robyn McLeod
