Obituary of Margaret Houston

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Houston (Stewart) on Monday, July 12, 2021. Mom was born on October 14,1933 in “The Gorbals”, Glasgow, Scotland where she lived until she immigrated to Canada in 1952. Mom worked with the Toronto District School Board as an Office Administrator until she married. Her love of dancing led to her introduction to a tall and handsome Irishman, Oswald Houston who she later married in November 1954. They shared 51 happy and devoted years of marriage together. Her children, Janice, Pamela and Richard remember her as a keenly intelligent, funny, independent and charismatic woman who loved to be a part of any social gathering. A skilled bridge player and avid reader were some of her interests as well as a love of words which was evident in her fondness for wordplay and puns. Always proud of her Scottish heritage, she was a talented baker of shortbread, wheaten bread and tablet fudge which greatly appealed to her love of sweets. Her grandchildren, Callum, Rachel, Rowan, Oswald, Elliott, Violet and Fiona enjoyed her sense of fun and generous offerings of treats and hugs. Mom, a natural athlete, received top awards in track and field hockey during her high school years and was an enthusiastic walker in later years. During the late 70s through the 80s her instinctive fashion sense and style were put to good use managing “The Room” at Simpson’s and The Bay. She remained proud of her Scottish roots till the end and still enjoyed Celtic music and singing ballads. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. We would like to thank Grace Vandevyvere and Deb Wieckowski for the care, compassion and companionship they showed our mother, as well as the Nursing Staff at University Hospital, 4th floor Medicine 1 for the kindness and outstanding care she received from them in her final weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer's Society of Canada in her honour. Messages of condolences may be left at www.londoncremation.com
