I first met John when he was a lifeguard at Tan O"Shanter pool in Toronto. I worked on the golf course and at the end of each day we (employees) were allowed our own pool time. John always joined in and taught the whole bunch of us to do a "shoulder roll" off the high board, (which resulted in a much bigger splash than a "cannon ball"). Within minutes waves were splashing over the edge of the pool. It was huge fun.
After that summer, I lost track of him for a while until, a few years later when I decided to enroll at Western U in London. The day I enrolled, I was filling out some forms in the registrar's office and who walks through the room - John! He was working as a programmer for the university.
So, we hooked up again and hung out together as I proceeded to pursue a degree and he proceeded to become the Manager of The Ceeps hotel. (It really helps to know the manager when there is a lineup around the block and you and your pals are trying get in to celebrate homecoming!)
My roomie and I had a lot of big parties for a couple of years and we always made sure that John was invited because had the best and latest album collection on the planet and would always bring the latest ones along. (I think we almost wore out his Beatles White Album by playing Hey Jude all night long!)
Around that time John was also drumming for one of the hottest bands on campus - The Talismen I think, and he came to one of our parties and proceeded to punch our bathroom door instead of someone he was angry at and broke a knuckle. Normally, that's not a big deal, but he was supposed to play drums the next night at a Talismen gig. The doctors wanted to put a cast on it, but he wouldn't let them. He just taped it up, took some pills and played through the pain! He was dedicated/stubborn (you pick).
I'll try and post a picture of him singing in the band. I took it in The Great Hall at Western I think and he's actually being the lead singer here! John Hodson, the usual lead singer is on drums as they switched positions and let John lead on Proud Mary. (I know that because I was right at the front of the stage and John stuck the microphone in my face to join him in the chorus!)
I'll also post a couple of party pics, if I can. Those were fun times!
.
I moved to the West Coast in 1980, so I only saw him occasionally on trips back after that. We did get to the Rolling Stones free concert on one trip, that I remember, but mostly we just sat around and drank a few Old Vienna's. (He must have been that brand's most loyal customer!)
RIP John. It was a good trip.

Another memory I have of John was when he was babysitting Lynda and I when we were about five and we lived on Benary Crescent in Toronto. The parents were out for the evening at a gathering at the neighbour's. The house had a fireplace between the kitchen and living room.
Lynda and I had gotten out of bed and were not being cooperative with "the sitter". Soon a game of tag ensued and John was chasing us around the fireplace through the kitchen into the living room around and around all three of us giggling and John deliberately keeping his pace just slow enough so he couldn't catch us. Around and around we went laughing and laughing UNTIL the front door opened and in walked Mom who had been watching this through the front window hearing the screeches of laughter. To say that she was NOT impressed would be an understatement. She was livid. John took one for the Team and we were sent to bed promptly. He was told, because of his age he should have known better etc. etc. Lynda and I felt bad for John but he took it like a trooper., Our big brother John, our protector John. Kind to us always and oh my goodness he was such fun to be around. I will miss you John.

One of my favourite memories was how predictable John was. As you may know he was a bit OCD. When I visited his home I would wait till he left the room and then make the magazines on his table askew. I’d time how long it took him to straighten them when he returned. He caught on after a couple of repeats and promptly told me off jokingly. We laughed over this many times. John was a good soul with a great sense of play.

John and I spent many evenings talking in the cafe at Westmount Gardens. We became good friends, and I enjoyed his company very much. Occasionally on a hot summer night I would bring in his favorite beer, Old V, we would sit in the garden to enjoy it.
I will miss our talks. He was a good man.

One of my favorite memories with John occurred when he and Lynda and I were returning from a trip to Toronto years ago. We stopped at a McDonalds in one of the Service Centres along the 401 for something to eat. It was at the time when McDonalds had just released the "McLean" burger and hyped it in advertising. We all got our order and took it to a table which was left in the centre of the room among other tables and sat down to try this new and wonderful burger (according to McDonalds). We each bit into it and were not impressed. Either Lynda or I (I can't remember which) said, "Mmmmmm McCardboard". The giggling began. Shortly thereafter, the other twin said, "Mmmmmmm McSawdust". The giggling now turned to laughter. John spoke up and said, "Mmmmmmm McPuck". Following this we were "gone" Belly laughs were so loud and long, everyone in the restaurant was staring at us. We continued to come up with names..."Mmmmmm McTasteless"...."Mmmmmmm MicRoadkill". We were laughing so hard, we could not catch our breath and reached a point were we could no longer talk to come up with new descriptors. Our faces were beet red, tears streaming down our cheeks. It went on for about ten minutes. One of my favorite times...............Leslie

I remember when John took Leslie and I to see The Beatles at Maple Leaf Gardens. Too much screaming.
We wanted to hear the music

I was a cousin too. Only knew John as Gerry. Then as life has it at the Ceeps. God speed and rest in peace.
