I was sorry to hear of the passing of John. John and I worked together at the RCMP Detachment in Leaf Rapids, Manitoba in 1979/1980. Leaf Rapids at that time was a four person detachment in a mining town of 3500. I was the Detachment Commander at the time. This was a busy and sometimes dangerous place to work. John and I worked a lot together on night shifts. When the shift ended at 3;00 a.m., we would go to John’s house drink coffee and play Backgammon because we knew we would ultimately get another call out for work. I would always say that after 8 hours in a police car with someone, you would pretty well get that person’s life story. John was no different. He had a great sense of humour and more importantly he was a very good police officer who I knew I could rely on in very tight situations. John had I both had a love for sailing. So much so, he introduced Leaf Rapids to the Hobie Cat 16 which he picked up in Winnipeg some 500 miles away!! We had some very interesting sailing adventures on the Churchill River. My sincere sympathy to Karin and family.
David Douglas, RCMP Chief Superintendent (Rtd)

Donna and I offer our condolences.
John and I were in Training as members of Troop 32. He was a fine mate and I enjoyed his friendship. When we all graduated and spread across Canada, we lost touch. I recall he was disappointed about not being stationed to Ontario and was not aware he had left the RCMP. It was wonderful to read of his life after the RCMP.
We wish you the best.

To Dad,
You're the greatest father a son could ever ask for. You accepted our family and all the ups and down that came with it. You loved my mom very much and for that I am forever grateful!
You taught me a lot of life lessons that will live on through me that I'll be able pass down to your grandkids. You will be forever missed and forever loved.
I'm very proud of you and consider you my hero. I can only hope to live up to the legacy you left behind.
Mark,

Dear Karin and Family
So many things to say and think about when I think of John. His light-hearted spirit, his easy-going nature, and his kind gentle face with that smirk of wit and humour that always made you smile.
He was a wealth of information and experiences on so many things and used that to help all those around him.
I’ll never forget how he would co pilot all the airport trips to pick up the kids. Always making sure Karin and I arrived safe while taking the fastest route. And he wasn’t even in the car.
One thing for certain, he has left an imprint on our lives and he is deeply missed.
Forever changed because you lived, forever changed that you’re gone.
Forever in our hearts, our hero.

Teaching John to sail was always entertaining, he was a leftie and constantly did things in reverse, but he finally got it and spent many great days on Lake Huron. So sorry he has passed R I P John

I was very sorry to learn of John's passing. I had the pleasure of working with John in Manitoba when we were both RCMP officers at neighbouring detachments; John was in Reston Det. I was in Virden Det., just north of him. I worked on the Virden Highway Patrol unit and would often patrol in Reston's area to offer support. John and I patrolled together and the time I spent with him represents some of my fondest memories of those days; 1976 - 78.... John was a fine police officer and was respected within Brandon Sub-Division. He also was well known for a wicked sense of humour and quick wit. London, Ontario is my home town, and the last occasions I saw John was at the Marvellous Muffin outlet in the Masonville Mall foodcourt where I happened upon him some years later. I was posted to Ottawa and visiting my folks in London when I came across John. We had a good reunion. My deepest respects to Karin and the Symonds family. John is someone you'll never forget when you meet him, and I'm grateful for the privilege to have known him and worked with him in Manitoba ("D" Division) now so many years ago. Rest in peace, my friend... You will be missed...

One of our favorite memories of John was a few years back when we were helping to plan the TD float for Pride. He and a whole bunch of our OEV family came together to help and we ended up loading a park bench onto a rented flatbed truck and he and another neighbour, Rick, sat on the bench dressed as the two old men talking about their banking in the TD commercials that were on at the time. It was a huge hit and he demonstrated that day just how much of an ally he has always been. We've always appreciated his sound, fatherly advice and when he had a knack for helping to just make life easy, like when I decided to get rid of my scooter and he very quickly found a buyer and took care of everything for me when I didn't know what the heck I was doing. He always had our backs and we'll miss him terribly.
