To The Gutteridge Family
We were very sorry to read of the passing of your Dad and we want to send a long overdue tribute to you Mom.
Your Mom tutored our son Morgan Hillier when he was a grade four student at Mountsfield PS.
Morgan couldn’t read and your Mom through much patience and weekly enticements of snacks and drinks encouraged him. Life changing for Morgan!
We are so grateful.
Morgan now is an Emergency Doctor at Sunnybrook in Toronto and is the medical Director for the Toronto Paramedic Services. His lifelong dream!
We do wish you our best during this Holiday Season and once again are so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely
Elizabeth Hunt and Clyde Hillier

Dear John and Katie and families, I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He was a kind man and talented writer. Your dad was a big help to me when I began my teaching career and needed advice on teaching Junior high English. I have so many memories of our families together at holidays and other occasions over the many decades we have known each other going back to1965 when we first met. I think of both of your parents often especially at this time of year when I remember all of us around the piano with dad playing Christmas carols. I'm thinking of all of you at this difficult time. Love, Suzy Parker

I am very sorry to learn of Don's passing. He was my English Department Head at Westminster SS in the late 60s, in my very early years of teaching. He was exactly the kind of mentor we all needed - so insightful, gentle, caring, scholarly. I also enjoyed reading his novels. Sincere condolences to all his family.

Dear John and Kate and families,
Your parents were a great blessing to my early years with Gerry and Suzy in London.
I remember them for their wisdom and warmth, their loving support and their zest for life.
I think of Don's humility and ingenious mind. And how many times I received a package in the mail
with another volume of his insightful poetry. Thank you Don!
John and Kate. May your own happy
memories comfort you in your loss. With love, Janet

I am saddened to read of Professor Gutteridge's passing. I had the humble privilege of supporting a few of his writing endeavours by typing poetry manuscripts, one of his books and putting into electronic format one of his textbooks. I will miss working for Professor Gutteridge. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear John and Kate we were sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. Don was a great person and we use to talk on the phone every couple of months. Talked to him last in Nov. and he was quite excited to have Gavin the Great come out with illustrations. I also remember your mother and him coming to my graduation in Niagara Falls 50 years ago.
Will miss him and hope God will strengthen you at this time. Dan

Don Gutteridge was my instructor of English at Althouse College of Education in 1971-72. He was an inspiration, making his student-teachers aware of the infinite possibilities and joys of their profession. He was also practical, sharing lessons and approaches that remained critical to my teaching throughout a forty-six year career.
I remember a Professional Development session decades into my career. A speaker declared that Faculties of Education were a waste of time, that teachers became teachers only after they were employed, working out best practice on their own. I disagreed and, unusually for such a forum, I said so aloud, stating I felt my own training had been invaluable.
The challenge was immediate and cynical: “Where were you trained? Who was your instructor?”
“Althouse, with Don Gutteridge.”
The next response was a total capitulation: “Oh. Well. You were one of the lucky ones.”
I was, indeed, and have always been grateful for that fact.

I was so sorry to read of Don’s passing. I had the pleasure of being in one of his classes for my MEd. Later he was part of a curling group first at Western and then Ilderton. I always enjoyed Don’s company. He was quiet and gracious with a lovely sense of humour. I loved reading his novels. My condolences to the Gutteridge family.

My condolences to Don's family and to all who mourn the loss of this remarkable man. I only met him on one occasion, which was a reading arranged in June 2022 by Tai Grove (Wet Ink Books) to celebrate Don as "The Prince of Poetry" for his long and prolific life as a poet and writer, and at the same time to recognize the winners of the inaugural Don Gutteridge Poetry Award. I will always remember Don's warmth and good humour that day. He made everyone feel at home. I was honoured to be among the poets who collections Don had selected (and Tai had published) for that year. He could not have been more genuine and appealing. Meeting him that day, and reading in his company, is a memory I will always cherish. May he rest in peace.
