Donald Gutteridge

Obituary of Donald George Gutteridge

Don passed away at University Hospital on December 1, 2023. Don was raised in Point Edward Ontario, a small village at the meeting point of the St. Clair River and Lake Huron. Don’s high schooling took place in Sarnia and Chatham. He attended the University of Western Ontario (UWO), where he graduated with a BA Honors in English in 1960. In the last week of his life, Don spoke of the hard times that fell upon his family in his final year of university, of feeling adrift and sad until he began his teaching career in Elmira where he met Anne Barnett, joyful and adventurous Anne, who opened the world as the love of his life for 56 years. Don taught High School English for seven years, later becoming a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Western University, where he became Professor Emeritus. He is the author of seventy books: poetry, fiction and scholarly works in educational theory and practice. Don, the son of Grace and William Gutteridge, was predeceased by his wife Anne and his grandson Tom Gutteridge. Don will be dearly missed by his son John and daughter-in-law Becky Seagram; daughter Kate Gutteridge and son-in-law Jeff Spence; grandsons Tim, James, and Kevin; and grand daughters Katie and Rebecca. Don requested that his life be celebrated in a small gathering of immediate family. Don’s family looks forward to reaching out to thank our loving community of friends and relatives and to remember the legacy of Don and Anne. Condolences can be made through www.londoncremation.com
